Forward Sound

good concepts can have negative side affects

This year, and especially this summer I have really explored the concept of a forward sound. It is really starting to help my trumpet playing. However, it has encouraged a bad habit. I noticed that in my pursuit to play forward (which has a whole lot of other vocabulary involved) that I started leaning my head forward to meet the mouthpiece (take a look at my last few videos to see what I mean).

This is restricting to my airflow. I am also a tall guy, and bringing my head down to meet the trumpet looks pretty funny too. I am so grateful for videos to reflect on. So what's a potential solution? I'm gonna try practicing without playing. I'm going to do 21 days of 5 mins a day. "Bring the horn to me." I'll do this sitting and standing. I'm going to focus on what I want to do, not what I'm "doing wrong."

Time to keep exploring,
